Scholarships are designed to reward academic success and promote educational advancement. If you are looking to higher education, earning a scholarship is a significant accomplishment. Scholarships do not only provide financial benefits but can provide academic benefits as well. Keep reading to learn how you can take advantage of the various benefits scholarships have to offer.
Financial Benefits
The average cost of college tuition for public (in-state) schools in the United States is $25,396 annually. Now more than ever it is important for students to seek out scholarship funding, no matter how small the amount. Every little bit helps! Federal and private student loans can help close the gap for students with no scholarships but can easily land you in a pile of debt after graduation. Adults between the ages 20 and 30 years old are paying an average of $351 per month on student loans. This makes it difficult to afford purchasing a house, affording a car loan and more. By applying for scholarships, you can help lower your need for student loans making yourself one step closer to financial freedom after graduation.
Academic Benefits
Earning scholarships can distinguish you from your classmates and help you fully enjoy your educational experience. Scholarships can also offer you opportunities to expand your knowledge outside the classroom with internships and traveling abroad. Earning multiple scholarships through your college career can also make you stand out against other candidates when it comes to continuing your education at the graduate level.
Finding Scholarship Opportunities
It may feel like there is a lot of competition for large scholarship awards, however smaller awards tend to have fewer applicants. You can increase your chances of earning a scholarship by applying for multiple awards ranging from $500-$2,000. Look to your local community organizations that may offer smaller scholarship amounts but have few applicants. You can also find education funding through various corporate contest, professional associations and work-study or co-op programs.
